It is a DNA virus belonging to the Papillomaviridae family and, unlike other viruses, does not have an outer membrane (envelope). This makes it more resistant to environmental conditions and facilitates its transmission through direct contact with the skin and mucous membranes.

It is estimated that up to 80% of the population will come into contact with HPV at some point in their lives, and that more than 50% of sexually active people will contract it at least once. Although in most cases the virus disappears on its own, in some people it can persist and cause health problems.

There are factors that can increase the risk of the infection persisting and causing damage to the cervix, including:

Risk factors:

Smoking tobacco

Beginning sexual activity at an early age

Having multiple sexual partners or being in contact with high-risk partners

Having a weakened immune system, either due to diseases such as HIV or the use of certain medications

Types of HPV

Not all types of HPV have the same impact on health. They are divided into two main groups:

High-risk (oncogenic) HPV

These are the types that can cause cervical cancer and other types of cancer.

Types 16 and 18 are responsible for up to 75% of cervical cancer cases.

There are other high-risk types that account for the remaining cases.

Low-risk HPV

They do not cause cancer, but they can cause benign lesions, such as genital warts or condylomas.

The most common are types 6 and 11, which are responsible for most genital warts.

Other low-risk types include 40, 42, 43, 44, 53, 54, 61, 72, 73, and 81.

HPV Prevention

HPV vaccination

Vaccination is the most effective tool for preventing infection with the most dangerous types of HPV and reducing the risk of developing cervical cancer.

There are currently three types of vaccines:

Bivalent vaccine (Cervarix): protects against types 16 and 18

Quadrivalent vaccine (Gardasil): protects against types 6, 11, 16, and 18

Nonavalent vaccine (Gardasil 9): protects against the same types as the tetravalent vaccine (6, 11, 16, and 18) and also against types 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58.

Who should get vaccinated?

Girls and boys between the ages of 9 and 14, as the immune response is stronger at this age.

People between the ages of 15 and 26 who have not previously received the vaccine.

Men and women with weakened immune systems or at high risk of exposure.

Vaccination is not recommended for pregnant women. It is important to note that the vaccine does not treat existing infections or eliminate lesions already caused by the virus.

Early detection of cervical cancer

Detecting HPV and its lesions at an early stage allows for timely action to prevent them from progressing to invasive cancer. To do this, it is important to have regular medical checkups and screening tests, such as:

Cervical cytology: analyzes cells from the cervix to detect abnormal changes.

HPV test: identifies the presence of high-risk HPV types through molecular analysis

Recommended testing frequency

Between 25 and 30 years old: Pap smear every three years, if results are normal

Between 30 and 65 years old:

HPV testing every five years, or combined Pap test and HPV testing (co-testing) every five years, or Pap test alone every three years

After age 65: testing can be discontinued if the last 10 years have been normal.

In immunocompromised women, such as those with HIV, it is recommended to start cytology at age 21 and perform co-testing more frequently starting at age 30.

We recommend that you monitor your health closely.
